3 Tips for Arranging Furniture in a Small Living Room

All spaces in your home can present challenges when it comes to the placement of furniture. Yet, the living room is often the most difficult room to decide where to place each piece. Since we spend a great amount of time in the living room watching TV, relaxing, and even visiting with family and friends, you need to make sure the furniture is arranged correctly.

How do you make the small living room feel spacious without overcrowding it with too many furniture pieces? What furniture should you use? Where should you place it in the room? By using these great tips!

Tip #1: Pick furniture that is smaller and fits into the room easier.

It can be tempting to try to fit that large sectional into your small living room. Even if it fits, you will quickly notice that there is not much room left over for your other furniture pieces. The last thing you want is to have to try to navigate a maze around furniture pieces just to get to the sofa.

Instead, look at smaller pieces that better fit the dimensions of the room. You could have a regular size sofa or love seat with an ottoman for resting your feet. If space allows, a small recliner or club seat could be all that you need.

Tip #2: Take advantage of your wall space for storage.

Rather than cramming shelving units and bulky entertainment centers into the room, utilize that valuable real estate on the walls. Mount the TV to one wall. Install shelving directly onto the walls high off the floor. By keeping precious floor space open, you will have more arrangement options for sofas, club seats, ottomans, and end tables.

Tip #3: Use end tables instead of a large coffee table.

Place smaller end tables in between your sofa and chairs to keep the center space around the furniture open, especially if you have an ottoman or two. End tables are also perfect to use in corners. For instance, you could place an end table in a “dead corner” that you would otherwise not use to fully maximize the space in the room. Set your sofa to one side of the table and a chair or another small sofa on the other side.

By filling up the corner and using the entire space, it may seem like you are overcrowding. However, this type of arrangement can make your small living room actually feel bigger. A corner layout will tend to read as a continuous piece of furniture, rather than individual pieces, so it gives the room an uncluttered feeling.
